Worse yet, our smartphones are with us virtually all the time, so we get calls, e-mails, social media updates, text messages, and other notifications throughout the day, evening, and even at night. In addition to our friends and family members who want our immediate attention, customers and managers sometimes think we should answer their phone calls, e-mails, or tweets 24/7. So we don’t even get a full evening or day off anymore. The problem of being connected after work has gotten so bad that some countries such as France and Germany have legislation in place to ban employers from contacting employees outside of work hours. Not a bad idea.
Cannibal Tasks
“Cannibal tasks” are tasks that eat up the time you have set aside for other tasks. Usually this happens with open-ended projects without firm deadlines or projects with vague goals that keep expanding and eating more of your time. Here are some examples of cannibal tasks:
➤Research a new training program (no set due date)
➤Find out how we can improve client relationships
➤Improve our hiring process
➤Clean your home (ongoing, never finished)
➤Improve your social life
